Self-Help Federal Credit Union, Northeast Family Federal Credit Union Announce Merger, Effective May 1

Apr 30, 2025

[April 30, 2025] — Northeast Family Federal Credit Union (NFFCU) and Self-Help Federal Credit Union (Self-Help) announced their merger, effective May 1, 2025. The merger will bring 5,900 members and 28 staff members into the Self-Help family.

NFFCU has two branches in Manchester, CT, and has been serving the Manchester community since 1938.

“This merger gives us a presence in the Northeast — a new area for us,” states Rudolfo Medina, President Self-Help Federal Credit Union. “We are excited about both the expansion into a new state and about partnering with this mission-aligned institution to continue to provide affordable financial services to the communities they serve.”

“Northeast Family identified Self-Help as a partner that will continue our vision to realize our community's full potential,” states Joanne Todd, Northeast Family Federal Credit Union President and CEO. “Self-Help’s mission is creating and protecting ownership and economic opportunity for all and its position as a community development financial institution allows it to offer a wider range of programs and services that help members and communities advance.”

NFFCU has a long history of service. Like so many of the credit unions that have joined Self-Help over the years, it began as a group of workers coming together to ensure they could have access to fair financial services. A group of teachers in the Manchester area founded the Manchester Teachers’ Federal Credit Union, as it was originally known, in April of 1938. These early members pooled their money and used the money to provide small loans to help those in need.

In 1975, East Central Connecticut Teachers Credit Union, based in Willimantic, merged into Manchester Teachers Credit Union. The name of the newly merged entity became Northeast School Employees Federal Credit Union. In 2001, the name changed again to Northeast Family Federal Credit Union, to better represent its growing and diverse membership. Today, NFFCU has $100 million in assets, two branches, nearly 6,000 members, and 28 staff members.
