Serving Communities in NC, SC & FL

More than Three Decades of Financial Services and Community Development

Since 1983, Self-Help Credit Union and Self-Help Ventures Fund have provided financing for people, businesses, and organizations throughout North Carolina. We have more than 20 branches, extending from Wilmington and Windsor in the east to Asheville, Hendersonville, Penrose and Rosman in the west. Our loans have reached first-time homebuyers, child-care providers, public charter schools, small businesses, historic real estate development projects and even nature preserves. We also build and rehabilitate homes and commercial properties in disinvested communities around the state.

Our Impact

  • More than 5,000 affordable home loans
  • More than 4,000 loans to businesses and nonprofits, maintaining or creating more than 39,000 jobs
  • More than 23,000 child-care spaces maintained or created by our borrowers
  • More than 14,000 public charter school spaces maintained or created by our borrowers
  • 14 commercial properties built or rehabilitated in disinvested communities, now leased to local small businesses and nonprofits
  • More than 200 affordable homes built or rehabilitated in low-income communities

In addition, Self-Help has been a vocal champion of many policy reforms. Back in 1999, we were active in helping North Carolina pass the nation's first anti-predatory lending law. Since then, we have advocated for many reforms, including immigrant rights, marriage equality and keeping affordable financial services available to working families.
