WHY: June marks the celebration of Juneteenth when many Black families will celebrate the end of brutal bondage of their ancestors in this country. It's fitting that the holiday also falls during Homeownership Month. The Black homeownership rate today hasn’t changed much in the past 50 years due to a legacy of systemic discrimination leading to wealth inequality
Buying a home is often the first step generational wealth building, but people of color still face discrimination in accessing mortgages. To close the gap home buying must be much more assessable.
With a mission of ownership and opportunity for all, on Saturday, June 18, from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., Self-Help Credit Union, at 7029 Harps Mill Road in Raleigh, will offer a day full of fun, food and family friendly events, PLUS a series of free workshops designed to strengthen financial wellness, with tips on building credit, buying your first home, student debt and more.
