Durham, N.C.- Grocers on Wheels will be rolling their mobile farmer’s market to the Durham Arts Council TODAY from 12:30 to 4 pm. They plan to be at the Durham Arts Council the third Tuesday of every month.
Grocers on Wheels is the creation of Demetrius Hunter, a fourth generation grocer from Southeast Raleigh and Anita Woodley, a public health advocate and performance artist (under the name “Mama Juggs). They generally buy crops at farms at 3 am and go to senior centers and low-income housing projects to provide healthier food to SNAP and WIC eligible people.
Grocers used a Self-Help loan to purchase their new truck. The loan was made possible with financial support from Bank of America for Self-Help’s lending. “The Bank of America Charitable Foundation has provided $100,000 in grant funding for Self-Help’s healthy foods and small business lending in North Carolina over the past two years.”
In addition to the Durham Arts Council, Grocers will be at NC Central University next Wednesday, March 25 6pm - 8:30pm as part of My Sister’s Keeper. My Sister’s Keeper is a show about health disparities for black women such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
