Self-Help is committed to breaking down barriers that prevent underserved communities from accessing homeownership, which serves as a powerful tool for building generational wealth. It is in honor of this mission that we are grateful to participate in the Reclaiming Chicago Communities initiative, which is breathing new life into Chicago neighborhoods impacted by disinvestment.

The Initiative

Spearheaded by United Power for Action and Justice in collaboration with key advocacy organizations, Reclaiming Chicago Communities takes an innovative approach to address community disinvestment. The program aims to:

  • Purchase and refurbish homes in targeted areas of Chicago

  • Create homeownership opportunities for community members

  • Replace vacant buildings with single-family homes

  • Address decades of disinvestment

Creating Real Impact

Reclaiming Communities initiatives have already shown positive results in crime reduction, fewer vacant properties, improvement in school quality, and the creation of affordable homes and safe streets.

Looking Forward

We are eager to learn about more home purchase success stories as the Reclaiming Chicago Communities initiative continues to make an impact. This initiative not only provides homeownership opportunities but also contributes to the revitalization of Chicago neighborhoods, creating a ripple effect of positive change for generations to come.

By working together, we can break down barriers to homeownership and help build stronger, more vibrant communities.
