As we continue to witness the destruction from Hurricane Helene and prepare for Hurricane Milton, Self-Help is committed to supporting our members through this challenging time. We've compiled a list of resources and services to help you recover from the storm and prepare for any additional storms for the remainder of hurricane season.

 

Food, Shelter, and Support Services 

If you are struggling to access the necessities, here are a few resources offering immediate support: 

  • Shelters: The Red Cross is operating disaster shelters in affected areas that are also providing food, water, health services, emotional support, and supplies. Find one near you
  • Food Assistance: Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina has activated their disaster response plans and has food assistance sites as well as some shelters open for support. Find a site near you.
  • Food Assistance (FL): All Faiths Bood Bank supports the Sarasota and DeSoto Areas. If you or someone you know needs food, water, or emergency supplies, check their website or call them at 941-379-6333 for up-to-date information on distributions. 
  • Helplines: Here are a few helplines if you need immediate support: 
    • Disaster Distress Helpline: Call or text 800-985-5990 
    • Crisis Clean-up Helpline: Call 844-965-1386 or submit details online  
    • Red Cross Reunification Helpline: 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) 
    • National Center for Missing and Exploited Children: 1-800-THE-LOST 

 

Getting Access to SHCU Banking Services 

Maintaining access to your financial resources during an emergency is essential. We have several options for members to who need to use various banking services during this challenging time: 

  • Branches: Many Self-Help CU branches have had to close or limit services as a result of hurricanes. While the situation has improved, we anticipate continued adjustments as hurricane season continues. Information about branch closings will be updated on www.self-help.org/disaster-resources
  • ATMs: If you have a Self-Help Credit Union debit or ATM card, you can get surcharge-free ATM access at: 
  • Online Banking: If you are enrolled in online banking, you can log in using the orange login box at the top of the website. 
  • Mobile Banking: If you are enrolled in mobile banking, you can use the app on your cell phone. 
  • Audio Banking: Note that power outages could affect audio banking. When operating normally, you can bank by phone by calling 866-708-0694 (toll-free). 
    • Enter your Self-Help Credit Union number and your 4-digit PIN (for first time users, the PIN will be the last four digits of your SSN or ITIN) 

 

Additional Financial Support 

If you have suffered financially due to Hurricane Helene or Hurricane Milton (property damage, lost wages, etc.), here are some options you can utilize for financial support: 

  • Disaster Relief Loans: Self-Help CU is offering affordable Disaster Relief Loans for current members who have suffered losses as a result of hurricanes this season. 
  • FEMA Disaster Assistance: FEMA provides financial assistance to people who need support recovering during a major disaster declaration. Find out more about what you need to apply and fill out the application
