Deepening Roots: Remnant Church Modesto

Services at Remnant Church, Modesto.

Ownership matters — not just for individuals and families, but for community institutions.

For Remnant Church Modesto, the chance for the congregation to own its own space meant not just stronger financial stability for the church, but deeper services for the broader South Modesto community.

For 40 years, Remnant Church has been serving people of all backgrounds in South Modesto, particularly the local Mexican American population. In 2023, after 26 years of renting and saving, the church, under Pastor Robert Romero’s leadership, was at last able to purchase the building they had been renting.

The acquisition provided 10,595 square feet of space for their congregation to grow and to continue serving South Modesto, whether through community kickball games or by joining forces with local leaders and community partners to host events at their location. Though an independent church, Remnant Church Modesto partners regularly with other local congregations, embracing the spirit of collaboration for the greater good.

Our branch in Modesto, California.

This loan marks an exciting milestone as the first commercial lending project out of our new Modesto branch on Crows Landing Road. The branch grand opening on May 23, 2023 was years in the making, and is Self-Help's first branch that features solar panels, furthering Self-Help’s efforts to expand clean energy and minimize our impact on the environment. The 8,300 square foot property includes a 6,300 square foot retail branch and 2,000 square feet of dedicated community space, which can be used as a gathering space by credit union members and community leaders.

At Self-Help, we know that access to affordable financial services is key to building strong, vibrant communities. Although we are different types of organizations, Self-Help and Remnant Church Modesto are both doing our part to build and strengthen community in South Modesto.
