From the Heart: The Medrano Family’s Story

The Medrano family in front of their home.

After 15 years in rental housing, with no outdoor space, and rising rents to contend with, Ernesto and Solanlly Medrano were ready for homeownership. They dreamed of a yard for hosting barbecues and wished for more space for their growing family. They had saved diligently, and had worked to strengthen their credit, but then the low-inventory, high-price housing market hit. It’s a familiar story: housing market changes often impact families of modest means disproportionately and can make homeownership seem out of reach.

"Muchas gracias a ustedes por toda su ayuda. Sin ustedes no seria posible. Se los agradecemos de todo corazon."

The Medranos searched the real estate listings for over a year, and eventually found their dream home, but they needed help with the down payment. Then their realtor referred them to the mortgage team at Self-Help’s branch in Sacramento. Their loan officer, Jorge Bueno, helped them access a down payment assistance program to make up the balance needed.

This collaboration between the Medrano family and their mortgage team is one example of Self-Help’s support of home ownership, leveraging financial programs that align with our mission of creating economic opportunities for all.

We worked with Ernesto and Solanlly to understand their unique challenges and helped them purchase a home they love. They persisted through a challenging housing market. Now the Medranos have a home of their own, with more space and a yard for the children. Perhaps most importantly, they've gained an asset to build family wealth.

“Muchas gracias a ustedes por toda su ayuda. Sin ustedes no seria posible. Se los agradecemos de todo corazon.”

“Many thanks to you all for your assistance. Without you, this wouldn't be possible. We thank you from the heart.”
