Internship Program: 
Self-Help/CRL offers a 10 week summer internship program that is designed to give students valuable experience in a professional setting while broadening their knowledge of Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI’s). Along with each specific intern project, the intern will participate in a series of brownbag lunches to learn more about Self-Help and the Community Development industry as a whole. Interns will also be given the opportunity to network with one another and other Self-Helpers through a variety of planned events.

Internship Description: 
Self-Help has supported high-quality public charter schools since 1998 through loans for facilities. As a CDFI, we specifically target schools that serve low-income communities, people of color, and other student groups that are not well-served by local school districts.

The Charter School Sector Intern will gain real-world experience in the community development finance industry while supporting the charter school sector on Self-Help’s Commercial Lending Team through various projects. Over the course of the ten weeks, the Charter School Sector Intern will gain experience in charter school facilities finance, marketing/ communications, and education policy. There may also be opportunities for travel within North Carolina.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Analyze the national charter school financing landscape to help the team understand competitive products in Self-Help’s target markets.
  • Research charter school policy updates in Self-Help’s target markets and help the Sector Leader develop a strategy for outreach in new markets.
  • Support the initial review of charter school loan requests.
  • Other projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-initiative and responsiveness to feedback

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with market or policy research
  • Experience with accounting and finance
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated interest in primary and secondary education

Physical Requirements: 
Frequently requires use of manual dexterity and repetitive motions, primarily with the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Must be able to occasionally lift and exert force of up to 10 pounds.
