1902 Outreach Associate - Durham, NC

The Organization:

The Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan research and policy organization that promotes responsible lending practices and access to fair terms of credit for low-wealth families. CRL was created in 2002 to protect homeownership and family wealth by working to eliminate predatory lending and other abusive financial practices. Our work has helped lead to major changes in lending practices, saving families over $2 billion annually. CRL has over 40 employees and offices in Durham, NC; Oakland, CA; and in Washington, DC.

 

CRL is an affiliate of Self-Help, a community development lender founded in 1980 that has provided over $7 billion dollars in financing to help 146,000 low-wealth borrowers buy homes, build businesses and strengthen community resources.

Position Description:

The Center for Responsible Lending is looking for an Outreach Associate to join our team in either Durham, NC or Washington, DC.  The Outreach Associate is responsible for executing organizational initiatives that support the advancement of policy and legislative goals designed to eliminate abusive financial products and practices.  This individual will work very closely with the Executive Vice President of External Affairs and the Outreach Directors to manage the delivery of programs and events designed to advance this mission through coalition building and constituent engagement.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a member of the outreach team and works with other staff to develop grass-tops/grassroots and community engagement strategies and tactics to advance advocacy priorities as part of issue campaigns.
  • Help to organize and maintain effective coalitions and partnerships dealing with organizational priorities.
  • Expand awareness of CRL and our priorities among community and public policy leaders. Identifies and positions CRL as a critical voice and thought leader in protecting families and communities from abusive financial practices.
  • Monitor, compile, and track the positions of allies and opponents through research and community engagement. Initiate new relationships and aid in sustaining existing partnerships.
  • Build and maintain strong key contacts at allied organizations for the purpose of impacting public policy officials on behalf of CRL's advocacy goals and objectives.
  • Represent CRL at presentations, workshops, booths, and conferences to educate coalition partners and community members on strategies to eliminate abusive financial services.
  • Provide support and organize the management of programs and events such as webinars, conference calls, and community meetings for coalition partners, policy briefings, and calls to action during critical campaigns.
  • Produce and issue educational documents, handouts, comment letters, and presentations that interpret complex financial issues.
  • Provide support to Outreach Directors on various projects.
  • Manages the outreach team’s contacts in CRL’s new contact management database including working with the team developing the organization wide database, developing and maintaining outreach team contacts. Also, maintains a team-wide calendar, and communicates with the policy and research teams to secure appropriate information for events.
  • Team liaison for all forms of social media including Facebook, Blogs, and Twitter to promote CRL’s emerging issues priorities.
  • Create newsletters, blog submissions or other materials for constituent publications.
  • Provide research and support for constituency engagement.
  • Perform other duties as may be deemed necessary.

 


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required with major in Business, Law or Public Policy preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) to three (3) years relevant experience dealing with issue education and event planning with a social justice foundation.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize all forms of social media as well as working knowledge and proficiency with Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a faced paced environment while maintaining strong attention to detail and ability to effectively plan, organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to form and maintain trusting relationships and exercise discretion with internal/external partners and social constituents.
  • Ability to effectively present information both orally and in writing and to appropriately and skillfully respond to questions from groups and/or individuals.
  • Ability to learn quickly and work independently.
  • Ability to travel 40% of time to external events.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree helpful.
  • Experience with Access and Adobe highly desired.
  • English/Spanish fluency highly desired

Physical Requirements:

Frequently requires use of manual dexterity and repetitive motions, primarily with the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.  Must be able to occasionally lift and exert force of up to 10 pounds
