The Proctor Hotel was built in during the 1910s, as part of an intensive period of construction following a destructive fire in the area in 1910. The adjacent Pitt County Courthouse and former U.S. Post Office, both listed on the National Register, were under construction at the time. When completed, the hotel was considered "one of the finest and best appointed hotels of the State," containing 60 rooms, some with private baths and all with hot and cold running water, steam heat and electric call bells. A large dining room, lobby, office and writing room were located on the first floor, and the building included electric lighting and an electric elevator. The building is part of Greenville's Historic District.

Self-Help completed a historic renovation of the building in 2004. It is occupied by East Carolina University, Legal Aid, Laced Boutique and Apparel, Uptown Nutrition, and a number of small private businesses.

Raleigh
